Animal prints are having a moment—NYFW just saw them on and off the runway—and leopard is leading the pack. Admittedly, I was resistant when the trend first started popping up, knowing all too well that bold prints can quickly slip into tacky territory. But leopard, I’ve discovered, manages to avoid that. 

The print is playful, sexy, and shockingly neutral (no, that’s not a typo) thanks to that goes-with-everything color palette. It gives it this magical ability to work with almost anything. Katie Holmes made it casual when pairing a leopard-print button-down with sweatpants, Ashley Graham and Rihanna proved how sexy it is with body-hugging silhouettes, and Hailey Bieber uses a pop of the print to dress-up her everyday looks. I’m now convinced it’s the one thing my wardrobe is missing.

Why not combine the trending print with a fall staple? This Abercrombie & Fitch cardigan pairs a cozy knit with a light leopard print. And while there’s a lot to love about this sweater—from those chic gold buttons to what shoppers describe as a “super soft” feel—what I most adore is that the base of this leopard is a soft khaki shade. The light color really tones down the boldness of the print, which makes the piece remarkably versatile.

J.Crew Sheer Chiffon Shirt

J.Crew’s chiffon shirt is perhaps my favorite pick, and it’s thanks to that sheerness. With a nude tank underneath and a pair of jeans, this is totally work-appropriate. But swap in a black bra and slip skirt, and the button-down transforms into something incredibly sexy.

Speaking of slip skirts, this one from Gap is a must-grab. That body-skimming silhouette and leopard print perfectly play into one another’s sexiness, but the length—which hits just above the ankles—keeps the style from feeling too va-va-voom. While this easily dresses up with a black pump, I actually think the best way to wear the skirt is with a simple white T-shirt and, when temperatures drop, an oversized sweater.

If you’re not ready to fully commit to the print, take a cue from Hailey Bieber and opt for a small leopard bag. It’s a subtle approach to the trend with a big payoff, dressing up and adding excitement to super simple outfits. This small crossbody from Coach’s outlet store is my top pick; it’s small but practical, loved by nearly 1,000 shoppers, and on sale for just $99.
