Why We Love It: Although the sleek cut of these pieces feels right in line with the current style zeitgeist, the smooth and plush fabric makes them ideal for sitting sideways on your favorite armchair with a computer in your lap. They’re something you could wear all morning while cranking out work and need nothing more than lip gloss and sneakers to run out for lunch.
Who It’s For: These are made for those who deeply care about having a complete look—even when no one is watching—but can’t be bothered to fully think about pulling one together every day.
Material: Cotton, modal, spandex | Size: XS–XXL

Why We Love It: Despite its relaxed, pajama-like fit, this hand-dyed silk set is sexy enough to wear out at dinner with the right accessories. According to House Of and SVNR founder Christina Tung, who designs the line and produces pieces in small batches, everything is cut on the bias, so the fit falls just right. The pieces, which are sold separately and come in 16 colors, are also simple to break up with other items in your closet—you might consider, say, pairing the slinky tank with baggy jeans or the loose shorts with a crewneck sweater.
Who It’s For: If you can’t stand the idea of spending money on clothes specific to hanging around the house, these might be easier to justify as they have so much going out potential.

Why We Love It: It’s pretty much impossible not to feel like the heroine in a French new wave film when you wake up wearing this slinky little silk look, which you can easily hand-wash between uses at home. Keep in mind, though, that it is quite a skimpy fit so if you’re between sizes you may want to go with the larger one.
Who It’s For: This is for anyone who wants something coquettish and cute to wear to bed without going the full negligee route.
Material: Silk | Size: 0–4

Why We Love It: Besides being an incredibly fun option to throw over a bikini while you’re sipping drinks on vacation, this crinkly wrap top and hot pants comes in both four colors and extended sizing (including both for “voluptuous” figures and petites).
Who It’s For: This is for the traveler looking for a less-expected alternative to their giant button-down or sarong cover-up.
Material: Recycled nylon, spandex | Size: S–L, plus petite (P), voluptuous (V), and very voluptuous (VV)

Who We Love It: Honestly this airy combo is so pretty and special that it feels almost wrong to qualify it as loungewear. However, because it is such a joy to wear, it’s the ultimate choice for when you need to look your very best for an event but can’t bear the idea of constrictive clothes.
Who It’s For: Have these silhouettes on hand for the kind of intimate house party where you want to look your best, but will likely be shoeless and sitting on the couch most of the time you’re there.

Why We Love It: If draping your body in buttery ribbed cashmere is not enough of a selling point, perhaps the curve-skimming yet still relaxed shape will be. It’s a particularly smart pick for long flights as you’ll look pulled together, stay warm, and have two separates you’ll feel good about wearing with other pieces throughout the rest of your trip.
Who It’s For: Travelers with limited space in their carry-ons—and WFH employees who need a go-to that’ll look pulled together as they slog through emails at their local coffee shop.

UGG May Loungewear Set
$98 at Amazon View on Nordstrom View on Ugg.com
Why We Love It: Made from buttery soft recycled polyester with just a touch of elastane, this one feels like a slightly elevated version of a sweatsuit with its wider-cut pants and just-cropped-enough top. It also comes in four classic color options, although we’d suggest black if you plan on wearing it outside the house.
Who It’s For: If you’re looking for something that feels like the tattered old hoodie and sweats you lived in throughout college but feels far more grown up, this is the set for you.
Material: Recycled polyester and elastane | Size: XS–3X

$500 $375 at Saks Fifth Avenue View on Wardrobe.nyc $500 at Net-a-Porter
Why We Love It: Yes, we know this is essentially a black sweatsuit, designed in collaboration with Hailey Bieber that costs $900. However, each piece is so precisely cut—note the blouse sleeves on the top and the pant’s trouser-like legs—that it looks purposeful and cool with no effort. All you need to do is add shoes (and, yes, those can be chic heels).
Who It’s For: If you’re the type who would rather shell out for one perfect version of something—versus buying, say, 10 lower-priced variations—this is a smart way to go.

Who It’s For: Anyone who wants to save the bulk of their budget for dressier clothes but still needs a good off-duty basic that’ll last a long time. (Or, you know, any shoppers who simply can’t resist a deal.)

Petite Plume Velour Lounge Set
$128 at Saks Fifth Avenue View on Petite-plume.com
Why We Love It: There’s something so wonderfully unexpected about plush velour loungewear, especially in the form of these casual sweatpants—they’re like something a 2000s celebrity might wear while waiting for the MTV cribs team to stop by for a home tour. Think of them as a way to feel fancy while you stay home to order sushi and catch up on The Bear.
Who It’s For: Order a set if you own way too many similar silhouettes in cotton, and want an excuse to grow your collection. It’s not a regular sweatsuit, it’s a cool sweatsuit!

Why We Love It: Crafted from featherweight merino, these beauties are actually available in one universal size. And while that sounds suspect, they are remarkably adaptable to different shapes: This writer, for one, can report that she wore them both while nine months pregnant, immediately after giving birth, and months after recovering.
Who It’s For: It’s such a chic option for someone who is going through body fluctuations (as we all do) and wants to be sure they are investing in something that’ll still fit in six months.

What to Keep in Mind
- Fabric: Loungewear, at its core, is meant for hanging out—so anything that’s less than supremely comfortable is not worth your time. This is something Mango Creative Director of Women Justicia Ruano and her team constantly consider when designing for the category. “We use soft materials that are high quality so the pieces can tolerate the movement and last longer,” she says, noting these are qualities she’d suggest customers look for. Tung also recommends considering the climate in which you’ll be wearing your set. “I have loungewear for different seasons,” she says. “If it’s winter and I need to be cozy I opt for warmer, fuzzier, and more covered up. In the summer, lightweight, ribbed knits and silks are what I reach for.”
- Fit: “I’m very particular with loungewear as I don’t like anything that is too constricting,” says Chriselle Lim, who has been sharing her personal style recommendations to thousands of followers since launching her (now dormant) blog The Chriselle Factor in 2011. “I love loose and wide legs—something that is skimming off my skin—as it’s comfortable but also effortless and cool.” Tung, meanwhile, always thinks about how the two separates will complement each other. “Personally, I like sets that balance how much skin shows,” she says. “Something like a high neck top with a skimpy short, or a strappy top with wide leg pants. “
- Purpose: Sure, the majority of loungewear situations don’t involve going outside or being on camera. However, it is nice to know you’re somewhat prepared if and when those situations arise. “I want to be comfortable but still look like I could leave the house if I needed to,” says Tung. “I.e. I don’t do flannel printed bottoms,” On the other hand, Ruano points out you can always cater your cozy clothes to specific lifestyle needs—this is something she and her team are always taking into account. Their Mango Home line includes “pajamas and loungewear sets specifically for staying in,” while the loungewear sets or pieces in Mango’s general collection are designed for more lively activities, like running errands or walking around the neighborhood. Knowing which option you personally will get the most wear out of will definitely help with narrowing the choices down.
Your Questions, Answered
What, exactly, defines loungewear?
Honestly, the answer to this depends on the person and their very personal style sensibilities. For those with a more glamorous approach to getting dressed, it might mean a silky pajama set worn with feathery house shoes; someone sportier will likely prefer a tracksuit. Lim, who says she’s very much “not a sweatsuit person,” leans toward knit sets with wide-leg pants and a loose fit. In short: The best loungewear is something you feel both physically comfortable in and fully like yourself every time you put it on.
Can you dress up loungewear sets?
Our experts all agree you can make a good stretchy and cozy two-piece look work for occasions outside of sleeping and movie marathons—so long as you’re strategic about styling. “For example, you could mix a knitwear sweater with a soft skirt or a pair of linen pants in the summer—or wool trousers in the winter,” explains Ruano. “Or you could also mix your knitwear pants with a more elegant cardigan or a sleek white shirt.” And if you want to wear both pieces? Tung says to go for something silky and throw in heels and fun jewelry.
Why Shop With Us
Alison Syrett is a fashion editor and writer with over a decade’s worth of experience in the industry covering everything from personal style to shopping recommendations, to emerging trends. And while she loves getting all dressed up for work, few things make her happier than finding a loungewear set that makes her feel chic while hanging out at home and around her neighborhood. She consulted the experts below for this story:
- Christina Tung, is a publicist who has two decades of experience working on the marketing and communication side of fashion brands, mostly recent through her own PR firm, House Of. She is also the founder and designer of SVNR, a line of handmade jewelry and hand-dyed silk pieces that can be worn both casually and dressed up.
- Justicia Ruano, the Creative Director of Mango Woman is the mastermind behind many of the brand’s notably elevated loungewear styles.
- Chriselle Lim, Founder and Creative Director of the brand consultancy Cinc Studios, has a rich background in the world of fashion as both a stylist as the former editor-in-chief of Genlux magazine and one of the original style and beauty bloggers of the 2010s. And as someone constantly in front of the camera—even at home and on the go—she knows a thing or two about making stretchy separates look cute.
