The reason for their takeover is actually rather simple.
There are sweatpants, and then there are jeans. Sweats are synonymous with comfort; they’re the “home” pants you wear when you want something flexible and buttery soft. Jeans, on the other hand, are typically more rigid, not quite as comfortable, and more, well, “dressy.” If sweats are home pants, jeans are outside pants, but the fashion world has thrown us all for a loop with sweatpant jeans (ahem, a sweats-jean hybrid) that can be both home and outside pants—multi-faceted!
Sweatpant jeans have been a topic of conversation among all generations—but it’s one that actually goes back a few years. Back in 2022, supermodel Paulina Porizkova waxed poetic about her Rag & Bone sweatpant jeans in an Instagram, writing, “I bought a pair seven years ago, and they are the single most used and precious thing in my closet. I never get on a plane NOT wearing them.” Then, in 2023, Cate Blanchett showed up on the set of Jimmy Kimmel Live! in denim joggers (power move).
But, sweatpant jeans have probably received the most buzz in 2024 and the first few weeks of 2025. Styles are selling out everywhere, which is the number one sign of their imminent takeover, not to mention brands beyond Rag & Bone, the label behind the $218 pair that’s gone viral several times, are churning out their own take, hoping to get in on people’s craving for what I’m deeming “disguised comfort.”

Social media certainly played a role in The Great Sweatpant Jeans takeover. I’ve seen countless videos on my Instagram of people trying them on—from Rag & Bone’s viral pair to Gap’s more affordable $80 lookalike. And while I’m not on TikTok, a quick search for the sake of this story revealed the plethora of shorts featuring girlies trying on their new #sweatpantjeans, a hashtag that’s garnered more than 35 million views on TikTok alone. The videos show a resounding gasp-worthy (read: positive!) response post sweatpant-jeans try-on; people can’t believe how comfy they are nor how much they look like real denim. “They look like real jeans…holy crap, these are so comfortable,” @lindsarnold said in a TikTok video. Responses like, “I want to buy immediately,” and “This is my literal dream,” flood the video’s comment section.
The Great Sweatpant Jeans takeover was bound to happen. Post pandemic, comfort and workwear changed, and most no longer wanted to feel restricted or uncomfortable in their outside clothing. But, there’s still an inherent desire to look “put together,” which isn’t always the case with true sweats. Sweatpant-jeans seem to be that solution: a secretly comfy pair of blues. And when asked about what she thinks caused this uptick in interest in these bottoms, Grace Na, creative director of Pistola Denim, simply sums it up: “Women want to feel comfortable and be able to move throughout the day…but still look put together.” The boom of sweatpants-jeans makes sense, and whether you love or hate them, there’s no denying they’re pretty jean-ius (like Good American’s style).
So, if you’re curious to see the hype for yourself firsthand, I rounded up some of the best sweatpant jeans still available right now, including a soft, drapey Gap pair TikTok was also raving about, and a $54 Nordstrom option.
