Proving that a black dress doesn’t have to be boring, Selena Gomez arrived at the Canadian premiere of her new movie, Emilia Perez, at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival in a gown that combined two Y2K staples. The long, black gown featured a sculptural flower corsage detail at the intersection of two delicate crisscross spaghetti straps and a delicate, ruffled peplum. Not only would Carrie Bradshaw give the details her seal of approval, thanks to the monochrome palette and sleek, stealthy silhouette, the look proves that when things come back around thanks to the never-ending trend cycle, they don’t necessarily have to look dated.
Gomez's dress is custom Rodarte (the original creation was red and was part of the celeb-beloved brand's Fall-Winter 2024 collection). On the carpet, she paired the all-black outfit with a bold swipe of red on her lips, a pair of dangling diamond earrings, and matching rings. She wore her hair with a deep side part with the lengths brushed into Old Hollywood waves and matched her manicure to her red lipstick.
While Gomez recently shared that she wouldn’t be releasing new music anytime soon, the new movie does feature her singing the song “Mi Camino.” Last week, when she shared a clip of the song and movie on Instagram, her boyfriend, Benny Blanco, gushed over her performance, commenting, “This is one of the best movies I have ever seen.”
According to People, Emilia Perez sees Gomez playing the wife of a feared drug cartel leader named Manitas who enlists the help of lawyer Rita (Zoe Saldaña) to help him undergo an operation. The outlet also reports that Gomez explained that the track was initially completely different.
“It was actually a totally different song,” the star said during a Q&A at the Telluride Film Festival. “It had a bit more of a rough sound to it and over the course of, you know, working with [singer-songwriter] Camille on the song intimately, it became almost like a ballad. It was more of a story about a woman and phases of life that she goes through and it just was beautiful.”
Emilia Perez arrives in theaters on November 1 and will be available to stream on Netflix starting November 13.
