Rihanna was fittingly lavish in lace as she celebrated the launch of her Savage X Fenty Lavish Lace collection at Nordstrom stores. The stylish star is always up for a sartorial challenge, whether it’s an off-the-shoulder fluffy bathrobe gown or a divisive shoe trend. And on Thursday, Riri did it again as she effortlessly transformed a Y2K-era club staple into a chic night-out look.
At first glance, Rihanna’s lace camo mini dress looked like something that people would have worn for a night out on the town in the 2000s. The olive body-con number featured a corset-style bodice with barely-there spaghetti straps and an opaque bra connected to a matching sheer lace bodice and skirt in the same camouflage print. The Fenty designer flexed her styling chops to transform the look into a more modern street style moment, pairing the figure-hugging mini dress with a mob wife-esque fur coat that skimmed her ankles and was worn off one shoulder. Ever the style vanguard, Rihanna leaned into a common fashion faux pas by pairing matching see-through lace tights in the same army green hue with open-toed sandal heels.
The multi-hyphenate leaned into her signature glam with a seasonal twist. The “We Found Love” singer looked ready for fall with a matching berry lipstick and blush, a shimmery champagne eyeshadow, and soft, side-parted black curls that were styled to look like they were still wet.
While Rihanna’s latest dress looked like it was circa her “Don’t Stop the Music” era, it’s not the first time that she’s recently taken style pointers from the Noughties or reinvented a Y2K staple. Case in point: As the star celebrated A$AP Rocky’s 36th birthday a week earlier, she stepped out in a black ruched American Apparel-inspired spandex dress that featured shoulder cutouts and went to her ankles. Like on Thursday night, Riri paired it with what’s quickly becoming her fall outerwear staple: An oversized fur coat. For her date night, she leaned into the indie sleaze vibes by adding leopard-print strappy sandal heels bedazzled with rhinestones, oversized sunglasses, and a 2007-esque heavy side-swept bang.
