One thing about me: I’ll do anything to collect a new passport stamp. Over the past year alone, I’ve visited Miami, Nantucket, Denver, San Diego, Houston, Stockholm, São Paulo, and Belize City—with more trips in the works. While it’s been a lot of fun, traveling can be grueling, and it used to take me hours to pack because I never knew what to bring. What if we suddenly went dancing? What if it’s chilly outside and I forgot to pack a light jacket? There are simply too many uncertainties.
However, I’ve refined my process after much practice, and now have a few travel hacks to share. For instance, I’ve stopped checking bags altogether after hearing too many travel horror stories (though, you could always go the AirTag route, too). Instead, I pack light, choose versatile clothing, and use compression packing cubes to stay organized.
At the beginning of summer, I treated myself to a shopping spree, and now many of the items that have been lifesavers on my trips are on sale. Even though it’s cooling down outside, these pieces can be saved for next year or worn when you escape to warmer destinations this winter. So, keep scrolling for a few of my favorite items that can be dressed up or down—perfect for days when you’re too tired to get ready but still have dinner reservations somewhere nice.
Everlane the Shirtdress
Orig. $98 $29 at Everlane.com
A shirtdress is always a good idea. I used to pack bodysuits and skinny jeans for trips, only to feel uncomfortable the entire time. When you’re enjoying pounds of gelato or sweating in a hot city, the last thing you want is something form-fitting. This breezy linen shirtdress looks stylish and put together while feeling so comfortable, it’s like wearing nothing at all.
Madewell Pintucked Slim Pull-On Pants in Satin
Orig. $98 $50 at Madewell.com
Satin pants are another travel secret I’ve discovered. Unlike jeans or trousers that take up too much room in my suitcase, the style can be easily rolled into a packing cube and paired with just about anything. A travel must-have!
Anthropologie the Love Knot Slouchy Bag
$98 at Anthropologie
In an ideal world, I’d have a matching bag for each outfit, but for practical reasons, I limit myself to just one. This oversized tote is perfect for the flight, exploring the town, and even a nice dinner—and it’s carry-on-approved, too.
Grey Ven Pryce Bomber Jacket
Orig. $625 Buy Now for $107
Recently, I decided I wanted to look more put together on the plane (just in case I have a meet-cute), so I upgraded my travel jacket. I used to wear hoodies, but now I opt for this faux-leather bomber jacket. Not only does it give me a more elevated look, but I can also wear it throughout my trip, unlike my old ratty college sweatshirt, which doesn’t quite fit in at nice restaurants or while strolling along the Seine River.
Vineyard Vines Silky Slip Skirt
Orig. $148 $45 at Vineyardvines.com
A good slip skirt is incredibly versatile and can be paired with just about anything. Dress it up with a silk tank and heels or keep it casual with a graphic tee and sneakers—both look great. Plus, it barely takes up any room in your suitcase.
On Cloud X 3 AD Sneakers
$150 at Zappos
When I’m in a new city, I love walking for miles. It’s cost-effective and lets you see so much more on foot. I’m a big fan of On Clouds because they’re stylish enough for jeans or skirts, practical enough to walk comfortably without blisters, and can even handle a run or a workout at the hotel gym.
Below, some more fashion essentials that changed the game during my travels.
