She's defying gravity.
After promoting her blockbuster film Wicked for months, Cynthia Erivo has officially made it to awards show season and stepped out on the red carpet for the 2025 Golden Globes on Sunday, January 5.
The actress put a sexy twist on her usual Elphaba-coded red carpet style in a plunging black Louis Vuitton gown with a silver floral brocade pattern and a sculptural rectangular peplum detail. A long skirt flowed out from underneath the structured piece, and she accessorized with a giant diamond ring, matching earrings, and silver hoops.
Erivo chose a thick liner, fringed lashes, and lined lips for glam, and her signature dramatic long acrylic manicure included pieces of rose quartz—perhaps a loving nod to her character’s on-screen counterpart, Glinda, played by Ariana Grande. On the carpet, she told Variety that she chose the crystal because of its representation of love. Elphaba was also present in her nails, as the star included several green talons as well.
Erivo’s look is a fitting one, as she’s nominated for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture–Musical or Comedy for her role as Elphaba in Wicked.
“Now that my feet are hovering off the ground, I cannot even come close to properly expressing what this moment means to me,” she wrote via her Instagram in December after learning of her nomination. “Not just because of this individual nomination, but because I get to watch as this project and my @wickedmovie family are celebrated, too.”
“Being a part of this project has been a dream come true, and playing Elphaba, a woman who speaks to everyone who has ever felt like they don’t belong and lets them know they have the power to defy gravity, has been the honor of a lifetime,” she continued.
Erivo has been previously nominated three other times at the Golden Globes. In 2020, she received nods for her work in Harriet, in which she was nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama, and Best Original Song for "Stand Up." In 2022, she was nominated in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or a Motion Picture Made for Television category—that year for playing Aretha Franklin in Genius: Aretha.
Her nomination for Wicked: Part One marks the fourth time that she has been recognized by the awards show.
