Enhance the unique silhouette of barrel jeans with these picks.
There’s been a shift in denim trends from skinny to baggy in recent years, with barrel jeans being the latest style to gain popularity. The polarizing design is also referred to as balloon or horseshoe jeans because of its silhouette, which is fitted at the waist and curves at the leg before tapering in at the ankle. This creates a bow-legged appearance for a denim style that is playful yet sophisticated.
Barrel jeans are a statement garment that makes for a low-effort yet eye-catching look, but the unique design can make them hard to style. Stylist and personal shopper Ashley Jebran says that when it comes to accessorizing barrel jeans, “less is more.” While you can reach for shoes that add even more playfulness to your look, simple options will allow your barrel jeans to really stand out. Jebran suggests avoiding overly bulky shoes or footwear with elaborate designs as they can be too distracting. “Since barrel jeans are more streamlined, you want something more minimal that will compliment that,” she explains.
Whether you’ve just bought your first pair of barrel jeans or live by the style, see below for seven types of shoes that will complete your look.
Slingback Kitten Heels
Elevate a pair of barrel jeans by styling them with slingback kitten heels in any shade. “The delicate heel and sleek silhouette of a slingback kitten heel elongate the leg and create a sophisticated contrast with the wide-leg barrel jeans,” says Jebran. “The pointed toe further adds a touch of elegance which can easily dress up your denim look.” Though a simple pair with no embellishments will go with everything, consider slingback kitten heels with buckles or in a mesh fabric for a chic twist.
Open-Toe Mules
If you’re looking for a shoe with the same elongating effect in the warmer months, reach for open-toe mules. Jebran explains that not only does the open-toe design “visually lengthen the leg,” but it also complements the more relaxed fit of barrel jeans. "The minimal design and often low heel keep the focus on the jeans without overpowering them,” she says. A block-heel mule provides a more casual appearance for a chic daytime ensemble, while a stiletto mule will give barrel jeans a more luxurious look for a night out.
Chunky Loafers
While it’s generally best to leave overly chunky footwear behind with barrel jeans, there are a few exceptions. Playing with different levels of volume in the bottom half of your ensemble will make for a unique look that doesn’t feel too over the top, especially with shoe-like loafers that have a classic silhouette. “The chunky sole and boxy shape of loafers add a modern and edgy touch to the vintage-inspired barrel jeans,” says Jebran. But, if you prefer a more classic look, penny loafers would also complement a pair of barrel jeans.
Sneakers
You can style barrel jeans with nearly any sneaker in your closet, but for the best pairing, reach for more minimalist designs. “Clean, minimalist sneakers like white leather low-tops create a casual and cool contrast with the wide-leg silhouette of barrel jeans,” says Jebran. “The streamlined design keeps the focus on the jeans, leaving you room to elaborate your look more with either a great knit or fun accessories.” A simple sneaker design can also give you room to choose barrel jeans with a bold design, such as ones with an acid wash or ruching.
Platform Sandals
Looking to add some extra height to your look? Consider a pair of platform sandals for bold footwear that still feels polished. “The height and volume of platform sandals add a touch of drama and balance the wide-leg silhouette of barrel jeans,” says Jebran. “The platform adds height and creates a visually interesting contrast also giving a sexy and chic addition to your denim.” A subtle way to make your platforms stand out against barrel jeans is to choose a metallic pair that will add a bit of sparkle to your look or ones in a vibrant hue to act as a pop of color.
Ballet Flats
Contrast the oversized silhouette of barrel jeans by pairing them with ballet flats. They’re a timeless option, ranging from Mary Janes to pointed-toe designs, that add an elegant touch to barrel jeans with a more pronounced curvy leg. The sleek and simple silhouette will enhance the wide-leg fit while still elongating your frame without the need for a heel, which Jebran says will “keep the focus on the jeans,” making them the centerpiece of your look.
Chelsea Boots
Chelsea boots are another sophisticated shoe option that is perfect for cold-weather days. Though the wide, tapered silhouette of barrel jeans doesn’t pair well with most boots, the ankle length of Chelsea boots will fit nicely under the fitted leg. Jebran says their sleek silhouette creates a “polished and put-together look” by “balancing the volume of the pants.” Whether you reach for flat or heeled Chelsea boots, this winter staple can suit everything from classic jeans and blazer combo to low-rise barrel jeans and a cropped sweater.
