It's a *bubble* peplum… get it?
Another day, another Wicked premiere, another bubblegum pink, method dressing moment from Ariana Grande. This time, the premiere was in New York City and the look featured the resurrection of a very controversial Millennial trend: the peplum.
Grande's latest Wicked-inspired look was a bright pink satin gown. It featured a sleeveless, corsetted bodice with a sweetheart neckline and gathered bust along with an elegant maxi skirt. The star of the show (or perhaps the villain, depending on your take) was the bubble peplum detail around the hips.
The peplum has a checkered history—after experiencing a burst in popularity in the 2010s, it faded out of style. However, in recent years, it has been slowly creeping back into a number of notable red carpet looks. Emma Stone, for instance, wore a similar silhouette to the 2024 Oscars, while Kate Hudson donned her own satin peplum gown just last month.
Grande's take on the controversial trend is, of course, the Glinda version. After all, her peplum could also be described as a bubble skirt. And—you know—Glinda comes and goes by bubble. Get it?
She completed the look with a silver choker necklace and she wore her hair in a slink parted bun.
This is just the latest in a long line of sartorial nods to the world of Oz in Grande’s Wicked press tour so far. Earlier this month, she donned a dreamy pink ballgown at the Australia premiere in a seeming nod to her character’s iconic dress. And, just last week, she wore a pink gingham dress that made a nod to Dorothy’s famous costume in The Wizard of Oz.
At last night’s New York premiere, Grande was joined by other members of the cast, including Cynthia Erivo, who wore a witchy black gown, and Ethan Slater. Grande and Slater, who have been dating since filming the musical, even had another cute little moment of affection on the carpet as they shared a sweet hug.
