And they’ve lasted me years.
As a lifetime loafer connoisseur, it would be impractical to put my dozen or so pairs away during fall and winter. This is especially true considering my boots selection is just, well, two pairs. My feet are not impervious to the cold weather, meaning they still need some additional warmth beyond my usual lettuce-edged socks, especially given my 15-plus years of boycotting pants. The solution, obvious as it may be, is thicker socks and leg warmers.
Before you roll your eyes hear me out—you can’t pick these items willy-nilly. Unless you’re okay with ordering socks every other week, you have to be selective. The problem is that it’s very hard to do that when there are (I assume) millions of options. The good news is that because of my decades of experience, I have it down to a science, and despite my expensive taste, the best is an Amazon five-pack that comes down to $2 a pair.
Loritta Pack of 5 Wool Socks
$10 $9 at Amazon
The Lorrita socks are almost too good to be true—can $2 socks actually be worthwhile? Yes. They are Goldilocks-level thick, soft, durable (I’ve had mine for two years!), and cute. They’re made with a wool-polyester-cotton blend, fit shoe sizes 5 to 9, and come in gray, deep-navyish blue, forest green, and brown. The brand also has 16 other sock packs in the same or similar designs.
Free People Snow Bunny Leg Warmers
$28 at Freepeople.com
Another option is leg warmers. I wear them with my loafers, but they’re also the only way to transition my newly discovered ballet flats into the winter. Though they’re not as ubiquitous as socks, the choices are still overwhelming. My favorite pair are from Free People; they’re thick but don’t look chunky, they’re a little fuzzy, and they have a slight ballerina feel without being costumey. I think the quality of the Free People pair merits the price but there are more affordable options that are also chic and comfortable. I like Cozyease’s Solid Cable-Knit Leg Warmers, which, at $14, are half the price.
