I get why so many celebrities are on board.
As a writer living in New York City who has way too many shoes to count, I’m considered the Carrie Bradshaw of my friend group. Another similarity? I never ever thought I’d wear a pair of Birkenstocks—until I did.

While I didn’t opt for a monogrammed Gucci pair like Carrie in And Just Like That…, I was inspired to try the brand’s Boston Soft Footbed Clog in faded purple, which I snagged from Urban Outfitters. How could I resist when everyone including Kendall Jenner, Kaia Gerber, Jennifer Garner, and Zoë Kravitz have given it their stamp of approval? Not to mention, it’s the style of the season, showing up on best sellers lists like nobody’s business.

So, why did I have such a hard time admitting that I wanted a pair? Because they’re very different from my usual heels and ballet flats of choice. The silhouette is on the chunkier side, boasting a round toe, adjustable buckle, and grippy bottom. But I learned I should never judge a shoe by its cover, given that the comfortable, contoured footbed made it all worth it.

I confidently wore the shoes all over New York City without breaking them in thanks to their plush and supportive insole. In fact, they’re so comfortable, I haven’t stopped wearing them. I even plan on taking the cogs on a trip to upstate New York because I don’t want to be without them for even a day.
They’re surprisingly stylish, too, seamlessly pairing with all kinds of cozy fall fashion. I like to wear mine with oversized knits, straight-leg denim, and slouchy socks. However, they’d look just as good with a long-sleeve sweater dress. Better yet? Depending on how you style the shoes, you can wear them in or out of the house; they’re basically fancy slippers that can be worn beyond your living room.

But perhaps the best part is that the clog is not one design fits all; Birkenstock offers tons of variations, giving wearers full fashion freedom. Zappos offers a smooth leather pair in a chocolate color, Nordstrom has a fuzzy black pair up for grabs, and Gilt has a corduroy pick on standby. So, choose your favorite below, whether you’ve been aching for a pair or are just now starting to see the perks of the must-have shoe.
