Break out of your winter style rut.
There’s a horror story brewing every morning during mid-winter when the obligatory weather app check comes around. The realization that the temperature is in the teens (with real feel and wind chills reaching single digits or worse) makes anyone want to give up before they’ve even had their coffee. However, I’m a believer that, as with many hardships in life, fashion is one way to cope. If not for the thrill of a good outfit, then at least for the need of protective and warm layers.
The mid-season chill is the type of weather that requires health advisories to dress for. The National Institutes of Health recommends people wear loose layers to allow the air between to keep them warm, wear a hat, scarf, and, in the case of snowy days, a waterproof jacket. When temperatures reach the teens and single digits, it’s also advised for people to stay inside as long as they can. However, between commutes, runs to the grocery store, and the occasional winter fun, there’s a human need to go outdoors, even if the wind feels like you’re being hit with an ice block.
Whether you need outfits to go to work or just cannot bear dressing for 10-degree weather, here are seven outfits that can spark up your sartorial joy, or at least, keep you warm.
Hide Under Your Balaclava
Balaclavas are a go-to piece for fashion girls who want to stay warm. Thankfully, they never really go out of style, whether it’s an embellished version (like this one from Simone Rocha) or a more classic style (like this Paloma Wool iteration). For styling, I’m a fan of matching the balaclava to your dress or sweater, going for similar tones that make the outfit look like one cohesive inside layer. Make sure to bundle up under, though.
Invest In a Scarf Coat
For the past year, scarf coats have risen in popularity, merging everything we love about the two winter staples. They offer versatility and flexibility, allowing wearers to sport the scarf around their necks or resting over the lapels. You can also layer up with a hoodie or balaclava for extra protection, as well as knitted gloves.
Let the Bag Shine
Going for the black puffer coat is nothing to be ashamed of. We’ve all been there. However, accessories are one way to level up this practical wardrobe staple. A trendy crescent moon bag, for example, adds a bohemian flare to your winter outfit while allowing you to keep your hands inside your pockets.
Tundra-Ready Athleisure
Just because it’s 10 degrees outside doesn’t mean there are no bodega runs to make. And the usual sweats and bomber jacket outfit can do just fine. Just make sure to add layers underneath (I suggest any from Uniqlo’s Heattech collection) and a fuzzy hat. Add cozy Ugg slippers or boots for the on-the-go It-girl factor.
Winter Whites
There's a collective urge to dress in all-black when the temperature drops. It may be the "blah" factor of it all, who knows? But there are other ways to go for neutral tones without looking like every other commuter out there. A cream puffer coat, white sweater, and matching pants are a tried-and-true chic formula. For added contrast, a black scarf can aid you from the freezing winds.
Teddy Bear
Every now and then, there’s a need to wrap oneself in a blanket-like outfit just to make it past the door. A close alternative is to channel the plushy cushions and blankets that make life inside a cold apartment bearable. Whatever outfit you wear, just throw on a teddy coat for a cozy and warm finishing touch that will feel like you’re still in bed. However, a polishing twist is needed: go for suede booties for an elevated take.
Florals for Winter Are Groundbreaking
If you’re feeling like you need to escape the winter, take a fantasy trip with a printed coat, preferably of a floral theme. The cinched waist belt is also another way to level up an otherwise bulky coat. This boho-adjacent pairing goes well with flared jeans and printed booties.
Colorblocking
While winter fashion is quintessentially neutral-toned, that doesn't mean there's no room for the occasional bright outfit. A saturated blue outfit—complete with matching puffer coat, balaclava, and oversized sweater—goes perfectly well with a bold orange handbag and sunglasses. Although the outfit is pretty basic, the juxtaposition of colors gives it a unique take that's so not boring.
