Funky buttons are the playful trend of the fall.
In her latest look, Selena Gomez gave a classic trend a funky, youthful twist. While attending the Netflix Awards Brunch during the 2024 BFI London Film Festival, the actress wore an English sartorial staple—a tweed wool skirt suit. The thick blue plaid number ticked all the tweed skirt suit boxes with its high neck, fringed hems, and understated pockets. So far, so classic. However, Gomez added a youthful twist to the classic ’90s old money look with the suit’s mismatched gold statement buttons, which gave the look a fun, vintage-y feel.
She paired the business chic suit with a pair of black pointed knee-high boots, sheer black tights, and gold statement rings to match the eye-catching buttons. She wore her hair down in a sleek, straight ’90s style and kept her makeup fresh and simple.
Gomez has been in England’s capital this week to promote her upcoming film, Emilia Pérez. Last Friday, she attended the London premiere wearing a slinky black dress with a keyhole cutout followed by a voluminous crimson ballgown.
In the film, Gomez plays Jessi, the wife of a Mexican drug cartel leader who fakes their death and undergoes as gender reassignment surgery. Gomez’s performance in the Spanish-language musical is already causing quite the stir. She and her co-stars shared the Best Actress award at Cannes Film Festival earlier this year and just last month, they were awarded an acting medal, the Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, by the French government.
Emilia Pérez marks new acting territory for Gomez, who was previously best-known for her work in comedies like Wizards of Waverly Place and Only Murders in the Building. However, after tackling a more dramatic role in her latest film, Gomez is ready for more challenges. “I would like [to push myself further], yeah,” she said at the London premiere. “I would only hope that every movie experience feels like this, whether it’s successful or not, I really enjoyed making this film and this process as an actor was a really beautiful one.”
