11 Sep 2024 — Darling Ingredients’ collagen and gelatin brand, Rousselot, reveals the results of two studies on the efficacy of its Peptan collagen peptides ingredient. The findings will be presented at Vitafoods Asia in Bangkok, Thailand (September 18 to 20).
The first clinical study, published in the Wiley Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, focused on skin beauty and investigated how Peptan collagen peptides supplementation impacts the visible signs of aging in East Asian women aged 40–65.
Published in Frontiers in Nutrition, in the second study researchers from Rousselot, BioTeSys and Triskelion conducted a randomized, double-blind crossover trial looking at the absorption profile of Peptan.
Healthy aging and skin effects
The first study included 85 participants who took 5 g of Peptan daily for 12 weeks. The results show significant improvements in skin elasticity and density compared to the placebo group.
At the same time, the researchers note a reduction in skin wrinkle depth as well as increased skin hydration.
“This study solidifies Peptan’s robust scientific foundation as a powerful ingredient for delivering evidence-based beauty solutions globally, including in Asia,” says Gaëtan Noiret, Rousselot’s global director of health and nutrition.
Boosting bioavailability
The second study assessed how healthy individuals absorbed bioactive di- and tri-peptides and free amino acids — indicators of collagen consumption — from bovine hide, porcine ski and fish skin, each with different molecular weights.
The researchers measured plasma levels of free and peptide-bound hydroxyproline (Hyp) and found significant concentrations of these metabolites. The results demonstrate stable bioavailability — meaning the fraction of a nutrient or bioactive compound that enters circulation — regardless of the raw material source or molecular weight.
“These findings further affirm Peptan’s value as an effective and bioavailable ingredient, regardless of its origin or molecular weight, underscoring its versatility for use in a wide range of product applications,” Noiret explains.
At Vitafoods Asia, Catarina da Silva, Rousselot’s science integration manager, will discuss the findings and their significance for beauty-from-within applications and overall well-being. Visitors can explore Peptan and the new research at booth #P10.
Rousselot has also recently spotlighted the benefits of collagen for sports and active nutrition.
Moreover, the company has pointed to the overwhelming scientific evidence of its collagen for bone and joint health, as well as its benefits for exercise recovery.
