The piece of jewelry has a sentimental back story.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s tour of Colombia has proven to be a fashionable one for the duchess. In between sporting stylish monochromatic looks and wearing Colombian designers during her and Harry’s scheduled excursions, Markle has taken the time to honor Princess Diana through her jewelry choices, too.
On August 17, Markle and Harry continued their time in Cartagena and visited the Afro-Caribbean village of San Basilio de Palenque in an all white outfit that she wore with a black T-strap sandals, a straw Maison Michel fedora, and Ray-Ban aviator sunglasses.
For added flair, Markle wore an array of gold jewelry that included Cartier’s Love bangle and Juste Un Clou collar. The American Riviera Orchard founder also accessorized with a sentimental piece—Diana’s Cartier Tank Française watch, Women’s Wear Daily confirmed.
The outlet reported that Harry gifted the item to Markle, which she began wearing publicly in 2020. The current version of the watch retails for $22,000, but Markle actually purchased a version of the watch after finding out that Suits was getting renewed for a third season. Now, the Duchess plans to pass down Tank Française that she purchased to her own daughter, Lilibet Diana.
“I’ve always coveted the Cartier French Tank watch,” Markle told Hello! Canada in 2015. “When I found out ‘Suits’ had been picked up for our third season—which, at the time, felt like such a milestone—I totally splurged and bought the two-tone version. I had it engraved on the back, “To M.M. From M.M.” and I plan to give it to my daughter one day. That’s what makes pieces special, the connection you have to them.”
Markle’s Cartier is far from the first time she’s honored Diana with her accessories—elsewhere during the Colombia tour, she wore Diana’s pair of gold butterfly-shaped earrings, which the late princess paired with a matching butterfly choker during a royal tour of Canada in 1986.
