Get ready for the rodeo.
Boot season is in full swing, and while I’ve already spotted the regular, fall time contenders like tall black boots and slouchy suede knee-highs, there’s a slightly more divisive option cropping up on the street style scene that might make you do a double take—and it officially has Laura Dern’s stamp of approval.
The actress was photographed arriving on the set of Good Morning America in a classic fall look, classic because it included a no-brainer staple for this time of year: a button-down shirt dress that hit at her ankles. It was simple, but she played up the piece with a high-contrast, highlighter pink turtleneck weather underneath, a Western-inspired, metal-accent leather belt, and last but certainly not least, those black leather cowboy boots. Yes, they’re back, and yes, you’re going to want a pair.

Cowboy boots have been trending for a while now—and I’ve been a fan for a few summers already. I particularly love pairing the Western footwear with babydoll dresses for a contrasting look that can be worn for Sunday brunch and musical festivals alike. But Dern proved the boots have staying power year-round. I love how she styled a more refined, fall-perfect dress with the easygoing footwear; the longer hem allows the boot to just slightly peak out, with its signature pointed-toe and tonal stitching as the star of the look. The detailing adds some major dimension and flair to the all-black ensemble, unlike a pair of simple boots could do.
While I’ll always be a fan of trusty black or brown knee-highs, cowboy boots add a rugged edge that’s a bit more than the classic knee-highs and a bit less than the ultra-grungy motorcycle options that are also trending big time; a.k.a., they’re the perfect in-between when you want a statement-making boot to take your outfit to the next level. Style it with jeans, skirts, minis, or maxis. The options are endless.
Below, check out some of the cowboy boots that I’m eyeing to make mine below. I’m especially a fan of the Thursday Boot options that are under $200.
