She's channeling her inner villainess.
Lady Gaga's press tour for Joker: Folie à Deux is officially underway and with her latest high-drama look, she has well and truly announced her arrival on the scene as the latest member of the DC Universe's stylish villain club.
At her latest Venice Film Festival event, Gaga stepped off a boat at the Hotel Excelsior with her fiancé, Michael Polansky. Gaga wore a dramatic Dior haute couture ballgown that made a serious sartorial statement. The dress featured a black velvet bodice with a plunging neckline and a crisscross, low back that revealed her tattoos. The drop-waist black hoop skirt featured a voluminous, folded design that erupted in soft waves from her waist, almost giving the impression of a blooming black flower.
Later, when Gaga stepped onto the red carpet at Sala Grande, she added a dramatic sculptural headpiece by Philip Treacy. Its two tall black antenna-like pieces evoked her character Harley Quinn's iconic vertical eyeliner and also gestured toward the famous cowl worn by DC comic book hero Batman. The two antennae were attached to a sheer black lace piece that swept elegantly in front of her eyes. Gaga finished off the red carpet look with a slick low bun, Tiffany & Co. diamond starfish earrings and diamond pendant necklace, and a pair of towering platforms. She wore a classic Old Hollywood makeup look consisting of a sharp black cat eye and a swipe of deep red lipstick.
This marks Gaga’s first red carpet appearance with Polansky since the pair’s engagement went public in July. An inside source previously told People that the couple, who have been together since 2019, “don’t seem rushed about getting engaged” and “act like a married couple already.”
Gaga’s latest evening look was the perfect compliment to the chic daytime outfit that Gaga had worn earlier in the day. Gaga previously wore another Dior haute couture creation by Maria Grazia Chiuri in a vintage-inspired black velvet day dress paired with a tilted black beret. In fact, Gaga has been wearing plenty of black during the film’s press tour. Yesterday, she wore a structured black and white polka-dot mini dress by La Roxx for her first Venice appearance.
It seems that the actor and singer is taking a more subtle approach to the recent red carpet trend of method dressing, opting for more low-key gestures towards the film’s theme rather than overt sartorial nods towards her character’s place within the DC universe.
Gaga previously spoke to Access Hollywood about her interpretation of the iconic character. “You know my version of Harley is mine, and it’s very authentic to this movie and these characters,” she said. “I’ve never done anything like I’ve done in this movie before, so it’s all going to be completely brand new and really fun.”
