It's showtime.
Jenna Ortega and Winona Ryder complemented each other perfectly in goth glam looks at the premiere of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice at the 81st Annual Venice Film Festival on August 28. Ortega channeled Lydia Deetz from the original movie, while Ryder embraced darkness—and power suiting—on the red carpet.
The Wednesday star stunned in a sheer red tulle custom Dior gown that paid homage to the crimson wedding dress that Lydia Deetz wore in the 1988 film. Instead of fully recreating the original costume, Ortega opted for an updated take that featured a frilly heart-shaped top, midsection cutouts, and a see-through skirt, which she paired with matching high-waisted underwear.
The 21-year-old completed the look with sky-high ruby heels, delicate silver jewelry, and coordinating glam that included shades of red on her lips and eyelids. Her signature black hair was styled in a low bun and face-framing curtain bangs.
Ryder—who reprises her role as Deetz in the upcoming film—also attended the red carpet in a black-and-white Chanel ensemble that featured a cropped black suit jacket, a matching waistcoat, and white button-up shirt adored with a satin bow in place of a tie. On the bottom, Ryder wore a voluminous tulle skirt similar to Ortega's, but instead of the bright scarlet shade, Ryder opted for a simple black.
Peach-toned blush, a beige lip, and thick black eyeliner complemented her updo and forehead fringe.
During the August 24, episode of The New York Times’ “The Interview” podcast, Ortega opened up about how Ryder made her feel comfortable on the set of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (she plays Lydia’s daughter, Astrid Deetz) and helped her with her surge of fame after starring in Netflix’s Wednesday.
“She was so warm and welcoming and kind and inviting right from the jump, and I couldn’t be more grateful,” Ortega explained. “It was at a time where my career was taking a different turn…[I] didn’t realize that I needed that from somebody who could relate, but I did.”
“It was a very transformative period of my life. We shot Beetlejuice not that long after Wednesday had come out, so one day I just woke up in somebody else’s shoes,” she continued. “Obviously with the success and the attention that she received in the ’90s, Winona had experienced that probably to an even greater extent, so she was the first person that I connected with on that topic, or she made me feel seen where other people necessarily in my life, as much as they wanted to, couldn’t relate or couldn’t understand.”
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice arrives in theaters on September 6.
