Planning holiday outfits for the onslaught of festive dinners, parties, and more can feel like a struggle. How am I supposed to come up with half a dozen unique looks? Thankfully, a pleasantly accurate stereotype of the magazine industry is that the people I work with are always impeccably dressed. When I am having trouble putting together an outfit, I look to the shopping guides, individual style, and advice of my colleagues. It’s panned out, as is proof in the fact that an innumerable amount of my most-coveted skin care products, shoes, jewelry, and clothes have been sourced this way.
As such, I went about bothering my colleagues, asking them what their holiday (outfit) plans are. Below are the hero pieces eight editors are relying on for their holiday outfits.
Abercrombie Off-The-Shoulder Velvet Mini Dress
$80 at Abercrombie.com
The repeat pieces of my holiday wardrobe need to be versatile. This Abercombie dress is surprisingly appropriate for whatever the season of cheer throws at me. For the ballet, I’ll pair it with a faux fur coat, stockings, and Mary Jane heels. For a family dinner, I’ll wear it with this fancy-buttoned Dynamite cardigan and sheer black tights. For dive bars, parties, cocktail hours, etc., I’ll wear it as styled in the above photo with lots of jewelry, fishnet tights, and platform Mary Janes.
And, (because I get asked about this a lot) most of this jewelry (two rings, a cuff, and the bangles) is from Jenny Bird. The hoops are from Rumored , signet ring is from Ana Luisa , dome ring is from Mejuri, and two cuffs are from Baublebar. — Tamim Alnuweiri, Senior Beauty Writer
J.Crew Gwen Lace-Trim Slip Skirt
$118 $68 at J. Crew
J.Crew’s Gwen mini skirt is the item I’ve been reaching for over and over again this season. The black slip is classic and a little sexy, featuring both a short hem and lace trim. But best of all, it goes with almost everything in my wardrobe. I, of course, love dressing this up. I have a vintage silk camisole and strappy heels I wear with it for a super slinky look, but I’ve also paired it with an oversized sweater and knee-high boots. My holiday style vibe can range anywhere from sexy to cozy depending on the event, and this skirt covers all bases. — Kaelin Dodge, Writer
J.Crew Pleated Ballet Dress
$128 $78 at J. Crew
I like to keep my holiday outfits simple and comfy, but always with a little added flair. I tend to pick my holiday outfits the day of the event, but for now I’m planning on wearing this pleated ballet dress from J.Crew—it’s simple but elegant thanks to the open back and sheer skirt.
I’ll be pairing it with these Tory Burch Pierced Mules that instantly elevate anything I wear. The shoes are definitely eye-catching thanks to the brass hardware and unique inverted heel cushion, but they’re also surprisingly comfortable. — Christina Butan, Senior Editor
Hutch Leva Jacket
$308 at Hutch-design.com
The look I’m channeling this holiday season is Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast At Tiffany’s. As a mom, constantly outfitted in Lululemon and Vuori, I want to dress up with easy and comfortable options that will impress my five-year-old.
The hero piece of my festive and feminine fit is Hutch’s Leva Jacket with hand-embroidered pearl embellishments that give it a sophisticated holiday sparkle. I’m wearing it with my LBD of the season, Lily Pulitzer’s Elsey Popover Dress. It’s classic and easy to wear, and I love the puffed sleeves to balance out my petite frame. This dress is also short enough to suit my penchant for edgy fashion, even while being demure, and sophisticated enough for family portraits. — Jill Di Donato, Associate Editorial Operations Director
DH New York Brighton Zip Cardigan
$249 $187 at Saks Fifth Avenue
My fiancé and I spent Thanksgiving in Fargo, North Dakota, where the weather plummeted below zero. So, I went the cozy route with this snuggly cardigan. It offered a soft fabric with a festive winter print. I wore it with wide-leg 7 For All Mankind jeans and white Cariuma sneakers. To dress it up, all I’d need to do is throw it on over a satin dress and add some boots. — Ruby McAuliffe, Associate Fashion Editor
For Love and Lemons Aspen Knit Top
$189 at Forloveandlemons.com
Behold the universal holiday sweater that supersedes your beloved black turtleneck (RIP). Its sweet rosette centerpiece and retro-knit fabric lend a vintagey feel, perfect for the holiday season. The off-the-shoulder design and cropped length make it a little sexier than your average holiday sweater (perfect for parties and Christmas bar hopping). Still, I also wore it with a high-waisted midi skirt at a family dinner, and I think even the Hallmark channel approved of my G-rated fit. — Irene Richardson, Writer
Gap Vintage Soft Polo Sweatshirt
$60 $53 at Gap.com
Gap has been one of my favorite online shops recently because they do basics so well. I bought this sweatshirt last month and have been living in it since. It's super versatile and incredibly soft. I've worn it to the office and on my Thanksgiving travels. I love that it's perfectly lightweight so I can layer it with other clothing items depending on how I'm feeling. It looks great with jeans, sweats, and leggings, but could easily be dressed up for an upcoming holiday soiree. — Essence Wiley, Writer
NYDJ Teresa Wide Leg Jeans
$119 $83 at Nordstrom
I typically prioritize aesthetics over comfort, but with these jeans, I don’t have to. There’s a reason Oprah loves the brand. In addition to their stretchy, flexible fabric—which feels closer to leggings than denim—the jeans are among my most flattering. Plus, the trouser style makes them perfectly appropriate for daytime or evening wear. I wear it with this viscose and silk Johnny Was blouse that is softer than 99 percent of my pajamas, and feels luxurious and smooth against my dry winter skin. — Sophie Wirt, Writer
