She gave a sci-fi edge to a closet classic.
At just 26 years old, Elle Fanning has already cemented herself as a style icon thanks to her decades of red carpet experience—from countless Met Gala appearances to repeatedly shutting down the Cannes Film Festival. And the fashion darling is just getting started.
Take her most recent appearance, for instance. On Thursday, Fanning attended Variety's 2024 Hamilton Behind the Camera Awards in Los Angeles and gave a surprising twist to a timeless classic. The actress arrived in a little black dress with a super deep plunging neckline, side cutouts, and a bow-like detail along her waist that flowed into a layered pleated skirt. Perhaps the most notable part of the look, however, were The Matrix-inspired leather sleeves with built-in gloves and a pearl embellishment on the wrists.
Fanning styled the mid-length dress with a diamond tennis necklace and black pointed-toe, sling-back pumps, but otherwise kept her accessories to a minimum. When it came to her glam, Fanning's blonde lob was styled into a deep side-part with flipped ends, and a thick winged liner and cherry-red lip completed the look.
On the red carpet, Fanning—who stars alongside Timothée Chalamet in the upcoming Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown—raved about her co-stars performance during an interview with Extra. “I am just so excited for everyone to see his performance and this film,” she said. “It was really, really fun. I mean it was a longtime in the making. He was trained for a really long time, and we got to finally come together and make it, and it’s just such a beautiful film.”
She added that Chalamet "completely" embodies the legendary musician in the movie, which is high praise coming from her, a massive Bob Dylan fan. "I used to write on my hand in middle school, 'Bob Dylan' everyday. I thought it was just cool to do that," she said. "I feel like I manifested getting this part." In the film, Fanning plays Sylvie Russo, one of Dylan's love interests.
At the 2024 Tony Awards, Fanning put a menswear twist on the trend in a black suit with baggy trousers and a tuxedo jacket with nothing underneath, creating a plunging neckline
Much like her appearance this week, Fanning paired the ensemble with a diamond necklace and red lip.
