Fashion trends are cyclical, so it was only a matter of time before culottes made their way back into the conversation. The last time I wore a pair of the ultra-cropped pants, I was in elementary school, and my mom bought them for me from The Children’s Place. Now, I’m definitely not a child anymore, but somehow, the trend still speaks to my delicate sensibilities.

Who is responsible for bringing this divisive trend back from the fashion archives? I’m glad you asked. I’d point my first finger at the Y2K renaissance, as well as celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow, Ayo Edebiri, Selena Gomez, and Billie Eilish, to name a few, who’ve all put their own spin on the trend.

Some people consider culottes to be more of a pant-skirt hybrid, while others confuse them with jorts or capris. But there are no hard and fast rules for culottes—it’s all about whatever speaks to you. That said, expect to see culottes everywhere this upcoming spring, but just because they leave half your leg exposed doesn’t mean they’re off-limits for winter. They pair beautifully with stockings and heels, knee-high boots, tights and sneakers—you name it. Think of it this way: The same way you’d style a skirt, you can style your culottes. The divisive pants also make transitioning from day to night effortless, as they can easily be dressed up or down depending on what you pair them with.
