They’re shockingly practical.
This winter has been all about black boots; we’ve seen everything from sexy thigh-highs to low-key riding styles. While you can’t go wrong with either, there is another boot that leans a little more practical and, IMO, a lot cooler. So of course Susan Sarandon, a forever cool-girl, just wore them.
Moto boots have become a go-to style among Hollywood It Girls like Hailey Bieber and Emily Ratajkowski, with the biker-inspired boots adding a grunge-edge to anything they’re worn with. Wrongly, I’ve considered them a Gen Z-style—in my defense, they’re all over my TikTok feed. Fortunately, Sarandon, 78, showed me just how ageless they are. The actress wore a calf-height pair that had two practical details: a small heel and lug sole. The shoes, which she wore over a pair of skinny jeans (to my dismay, they are coming back), instantly made her entire outfit a little bit cooler.

Dr. Scholl's Headstart Moto Knee-High Boots
$130 $59 at Amazon $130 $59 at Zappos
Dr. Scholl’s Headstart Moto boots are the pair you need to grab if comfort is your top priority. This knee-high style is made with a cushiony foam insole that shoppers call so comfortable, it’s like “walking on air.” But even though all-day support is what makes these shoes a must-have, they’re cool, too, thanks to the hardware details at the ankle and calf.
Gap Vegan Leather Moto Boots
$98 $15 at Gap.com
Gap’s take on the moto boot trend is now 85 percent off. Given that $15 is what I spend on a croissant and coffee, these boots might be the easiest fashion purchase I make all month. But the cheap price isn’t the only thing that makes these great; shoppers say the booties offer ample ankle support, are comfortable enough for all-day wear, and “look great with everything from jeans to tights to dresses and skirts.”
Seychelles Good Measure Vegan Engineer Boots
$100 at Freepeople.com
This pair from Seychelles, which you can grab on Free People, is my personal favorite. They have that classic moto boot look, with a wide shaft, small heel, and harness detail at the ankle. They’re also a shopper-favorite, with fans writing that the shoes are sturdy, well made, and so comfortable that one person even deemed them “bunion friendly.”
Moto boots are the practical cool-girl shoes Sarandon convinced me anyone can (and should) be wearing this season. Below, shop a few more of the styles I’m eyeing.
