“I don’t dress for the male gaze, I dress for the male gays!”
It's Katy Perry's world and her latest look was, as she would probably put it, "sexy confident."
The singer, whose album 143 is due to drop on September 20, made an appearance at L.A.'s LGBTQ+ club Evita Party last night—and she pulled out all of the style stops for the occasion.
Perry went for a bold, super skimpy look for her performance, wearing a snakeprint leather set. The bra featured a belt-like strap, a sexy cut-out, and black skinny straps. The ultra lowrise mini skirt, which was just a few inches long, featured tiny Y2K-style pleats. Under the skirt, two black studded straps were visible over her hips. She also wore dramatic past-the-elbow gloves in the same snakeskin print, with belted straps around them, giving a bold fringed look. Knee-high black leather boots and a pair of black sunglasses completed the look. She wore her hair long, sleek, and straight.
Her look was undeniably sexy, but as Perry noted, it was all for the gays.
“They say I do it for the male gaze but the truth is I do it for the MALE GAYSSSS 😘 Thank you @evitaparty for hosting a fabulous party last night 🧡 143. i love you,” she wrote in the caption of an Instagram post about the evening.
She echoed the same sentiment during her show. “I don’t dress for the male gaze, I dress for the male gays!” she said at one point in the evening. She also shared a kiss with Drag star Scarlet Envy while singing “I Kissed a Girl.”
Bold and sexy has been a common sartorial theme in Perry’s 143 era. She announced her first single, “Woman’s World,” with a statement-making red dress that featured a giant train printed with the lyrics of the song. She then made a press appearance wearing an ultra sheer lace maxi skirt. She also donned a series of skimpy bikinis and sheer mesh dresses in her music video for the album’s second single, “Lifetimes.”
